Franklin D Rosevelt's A Very Happy Hour Play

fdr a very happy hour Oct 19, 2026

A friend of mine and I went to Denver's Performing Arts Complex last week and we had a blast watching the fully accessible in ASL play called FDR's A Very Happy Hour. I have never gone to a play and NOT have had to ask for an ASL interpreter. Nor have I seen a play where one of the main characters is Deaf and signs! It was a breath of fresh air.

Even though, I didn't know much about FDR's life or what his wife accomplished, I found the play to be intriguing and hilarious. It was easy to follow along and the interpreters did an amazing job signing each of the roles including the audience.

It was neat that the audience had a role in this play as well. It wasn't a sit back and enjoy type of performance. We answered questions in a game show called The New Deal, members of the audience got to ask FDR questions, and we learned about FDR's mental state when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. Sometimes we don't think about how hard it must of have been for some of these presidents who went through horrible periods, whether personally or nationally.

Overall, it was an amazing experience and I hope you get a chance to go!
